ABSTRACT Brazil is the third largest fruit producer in the world, but many native fruits remain underexploited, as is the case for mangabeira (Hancornia speciosa Gomes). Little is known about general aspects of this species in its naturally occurring environment. Thus, this study aimed to characterize plant and fruit morphologies from native mangabeira selections in the Savannah-Restinga vegetation transition zone. The experiment was carried out in Patizal, Recanto and Recurso villages located in the Morros municipality, Maranhão State, dominated by extensive Savannah-Restinga vegetation transition zone with naturally occurring mangabeiras. Forty five mangabeira trees were randomly chosen from native selections in the three villages. Data collected were...

Bessa,Layara Alexandre; Silva,Fabiano Guimarães; Moreira,Marialva Alvarenga; Teodoro,João Paulo Ribeiro; Soares,Frederico Antônio Loureiro.
Hancornia speciosa Gomes (Mangaba tree) is a fruit tree belonging to the Apocynaceae family and is native to Brazil. The production of seedlings of this species is limited by a lack of technical and nutritional expertise. To address this deficiency, this study aimed to characterize the visual symptoms of micronutrient deficiency and to assess growth and leaf nutrient accumulation in H. speciosa seedlings supplied with nutrient solutions that lack individual micronutrients. H. speciosa plants were grown in nutrient solution in a greenhouse according to a randomized block design, with four replicates. The treatments consisted of a group receiving complete nutrient solution and groups treated with a nutrient solution lacking one of the following...

Characterization of the effects of macronutrient deficiencies in mangabeira seedlings Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Bessa,Layara Alexandre; Silva,Fabiano Guimarães; Moreira,Marialva Alvarenga; Teodoro,João Paulo Ribeiro; Soares,Frederico Antônio Loureiro.
Knowledge of the mineral nutrition requirements of mangabeira (Hancornia speciosa Gomes) is relatively scarce and rudimentary because there is a lack of consistent data concerning its nutritional demands at different developmental stages. The aim of this research was to characterize the visual symptoms of macronutrient deficiencies and to evaluate the effects of these deficiencies on the growth, the production of dry matter, and the leaf content of mangabeira. To achieve this goal, a greenhouse experiment was conducted at the Goiano Federal Institute (Instituto Federal Goiano) in Rio Verde - GO, from January to June 2011 in which mangabeira plants were arranged in a random block design and grown in nutrient solutions. This experiment was replicated four...

Characterization of trees, fruits and genetic diversity in natural populations of mangaba Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Silva,Ana Veruska Cruz da; Amorim,Julie Anne Espíndola; Vitória,Marina Ferreira da; Ledo,Ana da Silva; Rabbani,Allivia Rouse Carregosa.
ABSTRACT The state of Sergipe is the largest mangaba producer, which is a fruit native to Brazil, and has cultural, social and economic importance in its area of occurrence. It is an endangered species due to human actions, and despite its economic potential, there are still no commercial plantations. The study was carried out in order to characterize trees, fruits and the genetic diversity of natural populations of mangaba in Sergipe, Brazil. Fruits from Abaís Beach/Estância (AB) presented, on average, twice the vitamin C content (414.81 mg of vit. C/100g), when compared with the others. The use of ISSR primers was efficient in estimating the genetic similarity of populations. The primers clustered the populations of mangaba according to their origin,...

How freezing methods affect the sensory profile of pasteurized and unpasteurized mangaba pulp Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Gonçalves,Gilma Auxiliadora Santos; Resende,Nathane Silva; Gonçalves,Carla Saraiva; Carvalho,Elisângela Elena Nunes de; Resende,Jaime Vilela de; Boas,Eduardo Valério de Barros Vilas.
ABSTRACT The Mangaba, an exotic fruit of the Brazilian Cerrado, is very appreciated for its peculiar sensory characteristics. Here we aimed to evaluate the sensory profile of mangaba pulp subjected to three treatments (unpasteurized and pasteurized pulps; frozen by static air and forced air; stored frozen for zero, 4, 8 and 12 months). The following sensory tests were applied: temporal dominance of sensations (TDS) (identify and check the dominant sensations of flavor over time of consumption), ideal scale (identify optimal concentration of sucrose to be added in nectar) and acceptance test (to evaluate the effect of treatments on consumer acceptance). By TDS analyses, a sour taste was reported for most treatments, combined with the identification of a bad...

Hygroscopic trend of lyophilized ‘mangaba’ pulp powder AGRIAMBI
Conegero,Juliana; Ribeiro,Luciana C.; Monteiro,Antonio R. G.; Costa,José M. C. da.
ABSTRACT Mangaba is a widely-consumed fruit in the Northeast of Brazil, which is usually exploited through extractivism. This fruit is rich in various nutrients, especially in vitamin C, with pleasant taste and aroma. The lyophilization process transforms these fruits into amorphous powders, which must be analyzed regarding their properties and hygroscopic trend. Thus, the objective of this study was to characterize and evaluate the physico-chemical properties of adsorption isotherms of the lyophilized ‘mangaba’ pulp powder, with addition of maltodextrin (DE 20). The pH, titratable acidity, soluble solids, ascorbic acid and water activity were analyzed. Regarding the isotherms, the mathematical models of GAB, BET, Oswin, and Henderson were used at...

Stability of ‘mangaba’ pulp powder obtained by freeze drying AGRIAMBI
Conegero,Juliana; Ribeiro,Luciana C.; Costa,José M. C. da; Monteiro,Antonio R. G..
ABSTRACT This work examined the stability of lyophilized ‘mangaba’ pulp powder, rolled and packaged in plastic containers, with and without vacuum during 90 days of storage under room temperature, with evaluation of the parameters every 15 days. Analyses of ascorbic acid concentration, pH, color and water activity were carried out. It was found that ascorbic acid remained in accordance with the standards specified for daily consumption according to the Brazilian legislation in all analyzed packages, with preservation of stability in the laminated package with vacuum, which was also effective in maintaining water activity, which contributes to better stability of the product.
